UPDATE: Municipal Election Reform Advocacy
Our advocacy efforts have successfully advanced legislation to move Dallas local elections from May to November in odd-numbered years. Both SB 1494 (Johnson) and SB 1209 (Hughes) passed unanimously out of the House Elections Committee with 9-0 votes, marking significant progress toward creating more accessible elections for Dallas voters.
This reform will increase voter participation by aligning local elections with higher-turnout November dates, strengthening democratic engagement in our community. Moving elections to November also reduces costs for the city while ensuring more residents have a voice in selecting their local representatives.
The legislation now needs to be placed on the House calendar for a full vote. We will continue coordinating with coalition partners to encourage House Calendars Committee members to schedule this critical legislation. While we support SB 1494 for its focused scope on Dallas elections, SB 1209 would achieve the same outcome with a broader statewide impact.
